Oh Language –10
Several words have different meanings for contexts. Understandably, a
meaning is inferred in association with a context. Let us consider the
following
Admit, Application, Attend, Bank,
Bale, Bite, Bloom, Catch, Class, Clause, Crisp
ADMIT
The term refers to the step or act of joining or entering a place.
Admit can mean getting selected for some course of study as in “ I was
admitted into PG Electronics at Pune [where ‘admitted’ means the person’s
selection for the course of study.
Admit may also indicate being put to medical care as in “he was admitted to the cardiology
unit of the hospital. The ‘admitted’ here means the person’s being physically
brought for medical care.
Admit may refer to the state of ‘acceptance’ as in “upon intense
interrogation Mr. Jones ‘admitted’ his guilt of abetting the crime. Here, ‘admit’
means accept the role of guilt in a crime.
APPLICATION
A] ‘Application’ can refer to different pieces of information relevant to
a context. Often, the term is used to
indicate the process of seeking a place for study or employment by ‘filing
details’ of eligibility legibly presented on a prescribed form. Applying for
such a requirement is ‘APPLICATION’.
B] The paper used to satisfy the requirements in a ‘format’ is named
‘Application’. While ‘A’ implies the
process, ‘B’ indicates the object –a paper in this situation.
C] Application may also refer to the use of certain skills - as in
Biotechnology is not a theoretical study; it involves application of a variety of skills in
handling living cells under laboratory conditions.
D] Another situation refers to ‘inference’ as in the statement
The lower court in their judgment, reveal that there was no ‘application’
of mind in their pronouncement. In this observation, the higher court concludes
that the judgment of the lower court fails to convince of any logical deduction
[application of mind] and so, the higher court chooses to set the order aside [
=set aside the order of the lower court ].
So many applications are possible with the word ‘Application’.
ATTEND
The term ‘Attend’ is common and it serves to indicate different
conditions in our day-to-day communication efforts.
Attend may suggest the meaning “Take part in” as in “Please attend the
Wedding”.
Attend may also suggest the meaning “look into the needs” as in
“The nurses attend to patients on the latter’s arrival”. Here ‘attend’ serves
to imply providing the primary assistance needed to the patients.
BANK
Quite a simple word [Bank] to denote the place of money transactions
Bank can, also imply the edge of a water stream /river.
Bank can refer to specially designed store houses to hold stocks of blood
[Blood bank], Sperm [Sperm bank].
Political prospects compel the politicians to play “Vote bank politics”
–an expression that refers to sops and concessions extended to specific
categories of voter to appease them with a motive to garner those votes.
BALE
The term “Bale” refers to a massive bundle raw material like cotton /hay/
wool/ paper /cloth.
‘Bale out’ [MEANS TO JUMP OUT] and is a reference to help or support to
retrieve an organization / a person from
tough situations like financial crisis.
The World bank, provided funds that baled out[=bailed out] xxx country
devastated by earth quake .
