‘Brevity
is the soul of wit’
One of the most widely
used quotes is this. True to the utterance the quote itself is brief and pithy.
If something has to ‘reach’ the mind it ought to be crisp making it ‘impactful’
and thought provoking. It simply suggests “Talk to the point”.
‘Suit
the action to the word, the word to the action’
Though presented to
guide the ‘stage acting’, it is quite relevant to day- to-day life suggesting ‘Do what you
say and ‘vice-versa’.
‘No
legacy is as rich as honesty’
Of several virtues in
human life ‘honesty’ ranks the best and any act or edifice bereft of honesty
cannot be a legacy,
‘All
that glitters is not gold’
This quote- also has
the pride of being used as a proverb and most Indian languages do have their
proverbs ‘echoing’ the same cautious advice. Quite explicit in its purpose, the
quote says shiny, glittery sheen need not always be precious gold; it could be
cunningly deceptive as well.
‘What
is in a name? A rose by any name would smell as sweet’
The utterance was in
the play “Romeo and Juliet” where in Juliet expresses her love for the man
saying ‘had you been of some other name, still my love for you would have been
the same.
The crux of the
expression suggests ‘features or characteristics never depend on name’.
My adoration for
Shakespearean works is inexplicable, for, I am not a student of English
literature or Language. However, my taste for the playwright can be unreservedly
dedicated to the brilliance of Prof. Gopalakrishna Adiga, who taught us Shakespeare
[Play: MACBETH] during my B.Sc in Mysore. Such inspiring teachers are on the
vane now-a-days -Alas.
