ECHO OF EXPERIENCE – 3
ஆங்கில வாசகம் "First impression is the best
Professor Raman:
The author Prof G C
Abraham is a respectable teacher of Botany from The American College, Madurai.
A younger teacher of Botany, he impressed me by his drive to learn and impart
–the two facets that decorate a teacher. He is always willing to learn through
deliberation /dialogue –possible only for the learned. Naturally, I have high
respect for him. No wonder he ascended the ladder and became the Vice-Principal
of The American College. He has
expressed his opinion on my teacher profile as a fellow teacher of the same
subject since late1980s to date. I
thank him for his effort to recall things now 40+ years old. Thank you Prof. G

Professor Raman:
Being one among those who welcomed the idea of Shri Raghavan
Sampath that Prof K.Raman must write and share his perspectives on his
experiences in teaching, I do have reasons to expect him to take this call.
I, as another younger teacher being groomed and taught by
professors and teachers of the kind that
Prof Raman had had, share the concern that the knowledge and understanding we
received from elders in our times must be passed on to the present generation,
who fashionably name themselves Gen Z
engrossed with their own philosophies of life. I trust and hope that Prof Raman
will certainly encourage and inspire the younger crop as I myself had
experienced the delightful chance of learning with him, and from him, a wide
array of topics. I am certain that his scholarship and commitment that kept his
friends and foes (I know that Prof Raman has no enemies but there could be some
critics) busy and active will give them wisdom and a perspective.
As an effective
orator, thinker and prolific writer, I guess, Prof KR has always been an
impressive teacher and speaker who would venture stirring, challenging and
recharging the audience and therefore he
shall leave no one in slumber.
The teaser that is released yesterday on his blog coming up
is a proof of the pudding. Towing with Mr Leslie Antony (Prof. Raman’s student
friend from Bangalore) who introduces Sir, as a professor transcending disciplinary
boundaries motivating many.
I had seen this learned
colleague for the past several years, cherished and used his valued association
for enrichment and topping up. My first glimpse of the erudite Professor was in
the down side of eighties when I saw him bolstering in a felicitation function
arranged to honor another avid teacher and field botanist
Dr Sriganesan, former
Head of Botany at the Madura College. Professor KR was the programme leader and
the master of ceremonies up there
commanding respect and rendering justice to the function. He was both
flamboyant and succinct. ‘Eloquent’ in language and ‘structured’ in paying the
tribute to the man of day, without flattery. On that occasion I saw his awe and
appreciation for not only the then retiring faculty, but also on all teachers who stood tall with the
track record of combining nobility and service. Young or Old, KR sir would
always recognize people with content and make friends with them.
Over the years and across decades, I had seen Prof Raman
emulating the lofty ideals which he imbibed from his teachers who had made him
put his heart and soul in his profession. As an academic with acumen, he could
teach Botany with style, depth, breadth and conviction. Adopting a 360 0 approach
he could help his students and fellow teachers to muster and master the nuances
of discourse on plant sciences with skill and precision. He evinced prowess in
combining a rare trait of teaching classical subjects with the state of the art
information and work in tandem on modern subjects with resolute clarity.
He easily surpassed most of us and had never failed to surprise
all with his updates and information in both realms, even today. His book on
Transport phenomena in plants t is a slender treatise with packed information.
He never believes in chatter. It is for this he is respected. Much beyond the
portals of Madura College, Prof KR was well received as a celebrated teacher,
examiner, educationist and advisor in colleges and Universities around and
afar.
With the turn of time (in the dawn of this millennium), Prof
KR, who started his education at Sririnagam, studied in Karnataka, served in
Tamil Nadu, could go over to Mumbai for an administrative stint, after being
one of the most impressive Principals of his college. His wit, humor and
amiability fetched him friends always and allover. His presence of mind is
stunning. It is in the period that he was COE in III E amidst his stellar
contribution to work, he had written many interesting articles virtually on all
aspects of life, not necessarily in Botany. His fascicles are from language to
literature, music to entertainment, hobbies to sports, culture to cuisine,
health to science, technology, state and human principles, ethics, etiquette,
nationalism… and what not.
He belongs to such a brand of scholarly teachers, I am afraid
and I believe, a vanishing tribe now. Therefore and this is why, I think, Prof
Raman must write, write for the upcoming generations of students, teachers,
planners and citizens. Waiting for the curtains to rise.
G.C. Abraham, Friend and a Junior Colleague of Professor
Raman
