ECHO OF EXPERIENCE – 4
My experience about my college days:
My first college day started in 1982-83 as a Pre Degree
Course (PDC) student in Kerala Varma College of Calicut University, Keralam. It
was not completed as my father got transferred to Madurai, so after passing my
first year of college I had to start my H.Sc. Later in 1985 I joined my B.Sc.
Botany (Zoo. & Chem. ancillary) at Madura College Madurai but I couldn’t
attend my early days college as I was affected by Jaundice.
I was denied my first semester exam as I didn’t have required
attendance and there came support from my department HoD Late Dr.Sriganesan
where the attendance committee viewed my case as genuine and with a condonation
fee of Rs.25 I was allowed to write the exam. It was a challenge for me to
prove myself and I passed the 1 st semester with 75% marks which was supported
by teachers of all subjects. A change from school teaching it was a total change
as you have to listen the whole class and take notes there came my classmate
Late Mr. Ravichandran who shared his notes.
First my research ambition was inculcated through two of my
faculties, 1 Prof.Raman who showed me an International Plant Physiology Publication and
2 Prof.Nagasundaram (if I am correct) who taught us Chemistry ancillary. He
completed his M.Sc. and PhD from reputed University and had very good research
exposure and teaches through Chalk talk.
This inspiration was also supported by our college lab classes
both in Bachelor’s and in Master’s where experiments were done independently.
Here myself and all my class mates had hands
on experience in Microbiology, Plant physiology, Plant
breeding, Plant tissue culture etc., by Prof.Gopalan sir & Prof.Natesan
and others. Department field visits and Training to computer centre at Chamber
of Commerce are unforgettable. Despite a
good training we received in our
college, we had no option of project work – was a minor setback in the
structure of the course. Only one
expectation I have is that our mentors have to reach the below average students
to get them into group study as well as individual training by mentors
themselves will be effective . Science
students should be given open mind to go for
extracurricular activities to develop their skill in areas other
than the subject. Every year there should be an interaction between old
students with the present day students which can develops a network to know the opportunities.
Prof.Jayaraman sir connected me with my senior, when I first went to Delhi
University South campus Interview where I met my senior Mr. Abbas who was a research
scholar there. These impressions from our department [Botany] faculty were
instrumental for me to achieve my goals. Few of the faculty had their whims and
fancies which we get accustomed to . A student when in need to learn and get knowledge from his
mentors has to
surrender himself to them. Education is a great wealth in all
walks of life which can get all happiness to one’s life if we learnt and used
it in good ways. I am very proud to be
having batch mate friends and made a
private alumni meet after completing 25 years and invited all our teachers
except our Late Prof.Sriganesan sir in the year 2015 a very memorable day.
Still I keep visiting few of my mentors Prof.Raman & Prof.Gopalan when
time permits. G Suresh
