ENGLISH-30 -REPLY
BEING IDIOMATIC Vs BEING IDIOTIC
Well, the topic has
obviously rattled a Hornet’s nest, in the sense it has opened up more problems
than it has solved. That it has prompted the readers to seek clarification
augurs well to the very purpose of blog posts. My response to the questions
raised is as under: Before I settle the
doubts , I suggest that one looks for the ‘correct version’ and recognize the ‘incorrect form’ . If one
begins to proceed from the incorrect form, confusion can readily bewilder
him/her and frustrate any inclination to understand the idiom.
1 Couldn’t care less
means only minimum care is being given; it cannot be lowered further [so, could
care less in inappropriate].
2 For all intents and
purposes clearly means that whatever intention /purpose [this method can help]
3 First come first
served means to get attention go early to the place. First come first serve means if you came early,
you should work [no
guest can be asked to work]
4 Dog eat dog means
stiff competition; but Doggy dog doesn’t
mean any specific item or act.
5 Sleight of hand means
cunning act [correct]but, Slight of hand means weak or poor hand
Beck and Call means to
be ready to respond to someone who has helped us. Beckon means ‘signal’ and
beckon call is not appropriate .so, Beck and Call is the correct version. .
So, before using an
idiom it is vital to know the correct version ,instead of settling for improper
expression .
Thank you
Regards
K. Raman
