JUDGMENT

By picking up this title, I do not imply any judicial act nor the one assiduously suggested in religious scriptures, trying to ‘condition’ human activity from going berserk. The one being presented here and now, pertains to our day-to-day requirement [predicament?] of deciding upon something to arrive at ‘this’ or ‘that’ both bewildering by the prospects that do not reveal themselves at the moment.

In all such ‘demanding’ moments, “here and now” keep staring at us in great urgency. Yet, over the years we have managed to slither through without a notable discomfort.

In all such safe ‘passes’ we have had, may be a right decision was arrived at either by alacrity of judgment or by divine guidance. Things could have gone either way is the general feeling that one realizes in hindsight.

Why was it – a near gamble? Can we right away peg on the most important factor behind our ‘judgment’?

To come out with a pronouncement- most plausible, could itself be more intricate than our earlier predicament on making a right decision. So, to perceive that we were thoughtful on all such occasions looks well-nigh impossible to have survived the prospect of a peril invited, if not invented!

What is it that one has to cultivate in self for steering clear of making improper decisions; too often improper decisions are impulsive, being tempted by immediate gains. On most occasions of decisive moments –‘for now and for a longtime to come’ are the two conflicting options. Also, long term prospects are less attractive than instant benefit though the latter is beset with hurdles of varied kind.

When temptation of lure grips the mind, the faculty of judgment recedes or is overpowered by desire.  It makes the event of judgment –impulsive. Decisions arrived at by personal impulsion or compulsion of minds surrounding us need not end in peace of mind; at times could end up in pieces of mind.

So, avoidance of impulsive decision-making, demands dispassionate evaluation of all the facets relevant to an issue.    Essentially the faculty of analysis must be called into play to stay free of bias or extraneous factors of attraction.

What does it mean?

In plain terms, one has to be honest in assessing the merits of an issue and realize the outcome suitable to our situations.

The process is simply ‘comprehension’ –a function that should catch up with anyone claiming to be an educated individual. Always let us try to make infallible judgments within our limitations.
