CONTEMPT about the COMPETENT
Impelled by a bizarre understanding, many persons display scorn over
those who are rated ‘competent’. A number of
issues causing a mental
vicissitude of confusion and the resultant frustration in work seem to plague
the perceptions of fellow travellers; driven by such ill-conceived opinion,
persons of competence are viewed with suspicion of tactical manipulation in
managing ascension by blessings from powers that be.
Often, the element of contempt springs from the state of seniority
differences between the quick-ascending junior and the long- languishing
senior.
People fail to recognize that ‘competence’ is no product of seniority. At best seniority fans the tendency of
‘looking forward to promotions /resultant benefits’ on the sheer span of
service with nothing of any proven sample of functional supremacy or efficacy.
Largely, this consideration is a product of ‘uniform’ “treatment” for all
with no special reward or reprimand as a token of performance consideration.
Among teachers, I have observed that “the most competent stays unnoticed
[no reward] and the most incompetent escapes un-punished [no reprimand].
Any arrangement that fails to draw lines between able performers and those
of perfunctory trends in work , inevitably blesses inefficiency and paves the
way for callous indifference to time schedules.
Personnel groomed by systems of ‘uniform treatment’ take pride of their
long tenure of service markedly bereft of any creativity.
With nothing to field as ‘evidence
of skill’, personnel display the tendency to denounce ascension by competence;
an act far simpler to resort to and to
cite ‘discrimination’ against seniority.
Such minds of scorn seldom understand the qualitative difference between
a fertile mind and that of a futile seniority. No wonder vivid contempt comes
to the fore when competence receives accolades. Competence will always register
‘supremacy’ if not ascension, no matter who says what. Competence can never be
fettered.
