TURKEY BERRY
Solanum torvum [Tam: Sundaikkaai]
The plant is a native
of South American islands and now widely distributed in all warm regions
A tall shrub [9-12 ft]
with branches, green leaves, white flowers forming clusters of berries on
prominent stalks.
The plant is Botanically
named Solanum torvum.
The berries are green,
used as vegetable and the dry fruits are food additives and highly medicinal.
Literature reveals a
large variety of uses for the plant and literally appears to be a panacea in
that, a variety of values as a therapeutic agent is ascribed to the pant.
Pharmacologically active compounds are said to be known from Turkey berry.
These include, sapogenin and chlorogenin [steroid]
Methyl caffeate derived
from the fruit [berries] shows anti-diabetic effect in mice.
Practically every organ
in human system can be positively toned up by the fruits of turkey berries.
