Oh Language -23
All terms beginning in ‘In’ need not be a negative of something. They
could themselves be root words. Some such items are presented now.
Incipient
The term refers to the early state of formation or beginning. “The old
man shows signs of incipient dementia”
Incur
The term signifies a loss or bad effect from one’s effort as in ‘He incurred a huge loss by
venturing into a trade unknown to him’
Indemnity
The term refers to a protection to safeguard against some possible damage
or loss; it may also refer to some money paid to compensate for a loss. For all
international trade a certain ‘indemnity bond’ has to be executed by the
trader.
Inflammable
The term refers to the property of readiness to burn or catch fire as in
‘petrol is highly inflammable’. But, ‘inflammable’ is not the negative of
‘flammable’, because ‘flammable’ refers to the character of being ‘easy to
burn. Of the two ‘inflammable’ signifies a far more aggressive quickness of burning
than of a ‘flammable’ item.
Infructuous
Means –unnecessary or pointless or irrelevant .An example: In the light
of the apex court’s detailed clarification, any appeal or review petition in
the matter is infructuous.
Infuriate
The term refers to the act causing fiery anger in someone by some
utterance or act. ‘The nonchalant replies of the accused infuriated the judge’.
Infuse
The term signifies an act or process that helps to introduce or add
something as in “Injections help to infuse medicines into blood stream to reach
all parts of body more rapidly”. ‘Good parents infuse a sense of responsibility
in children by appropriate cultivation of habits’.
Inordinate
The expression refers to something being much greater or longer than
usual or known to be of [but certainly not the opposite of ‘ordinate’ –a
mathematical term]
“There was an inordinate delay in the publication of examination results
due to disruption of work by employees’ strike”
Insipid
The term refers to poor aroma or taste or colour . “The cakes served
yesterday were insipid”
