The plant is a member
of the sunflower family. The plant is
widely distributed; a small herb growing flat on the ground with the terminal
flowering stem raised above the ground.
There are a range of
plants, representing different species of Eclipta. Most of them go by the same
local name. However, in T.N the plants are referred to by the floral coloration
as White or Yellow Karisalanganni. In certain parts of India, the plant [mainly
the leaves] is cooked as vegetable.
In most parts of India,
the plant is a well-known ‘hair tonic’.
The leaves or the extract are infused into oil [coconut oil] and used for nourishing
the scalp and promoting hair growth.
Eclipta plants have a
range of phytochemicals that include Polypeptides, Poly acetylenes, Coumestans,
Derivatives of Thiophenes, Sterols, Steroids, Triterpenes and Flavonoids.
Phytochemistry of this
tiny herb serves to nourish hair follicles of humans.
