It is a herb of
moderate growth and is fairly widespread and popular as vegetable and as hair
tonic. In some cultures, the plant is
used as herbal medicine. The plant needs high amount of organic matter, water
and nitrogen.
In many countries , the
leaves are consumed as vegetable; some cultures boil the leaves in oil and
allow it settle for use as hair tonic . Two versions –white and yellow are
named after their flower colour –white or yellow. Either can be used for hair
tonic oil
Several medicinal
properties of the plant are traceable to Alkaloids, flavonoids, Terpenoids, tanninds and phenols.
Antioxidant property of
A. sessilis is attributed to Catechin, Ferulic
acid and Lupeol. These are said to confer anti-inflammatory, anticancer potential
to the plant.
A wide variety of
Alternanthera species carry different bio-molecular derivatives that can alleviate
human suffering. In all Alternanthera sessilis is a small plant of great value
to human welfare.
