Basella alba [Malabar spinach]
A
well-known green in South India is Baseiia
alba .Popular as ‘pasalai keerai’ in Tamil while it is ‘Poi’ in Hindi,
‘Bachhali’in Telugu, ‘Basala or pasalikeera’ in Malayalam and ‘Basale soppu’ in
Kannadaa .So, in India this climber has value as a vegetable [green].
Other
than its food value this green is said to possess some serious value as a
medicinal herb. Three important functional utilities are associated with Basella .These include value as
‘Laxative’, 2 as an anti-inflammatory agent and 3 ulcer curing potential.
The
green is said to enhance digestion in children and in pregnant woman who
develop tendencies of constipation.
Ulcer-curing
ability of Basella is said to be
effective against mouth ulcers as well as in curing stomach irritation
In
folk medicine, Basella is used to
treat fever.
