OPPORTUNITY- II

                         OPPORTUNITY – II

                         Other facets of value

                         Expression

Expression is the real vehicle that carries the interaction and the interacting person to a logical end from the evaluators’ point of view. It is getting increasingly clear that quality of expressions are judged from relevance; relevance is a composite entity pertaining to aptness for meaning, legitimacy in response and the brevity with which the reply comes forth in convincing the opponent. Well, these are items that come by practice of usage. Therefore, everyone has to keep honing his/her skills as a daily exercise of tuning the skills of communication. It is not necessary to employ uncommon words; rather one has to train self to employ alternative terms to avoid looking repetitive.

                         Composure and Confidence

Composure and Confidence are related manifestations. Each supports the other as if the two represent an object and its shadow –of course with positions interchanging between the two. In simpler terms, composure is from confidence and it portrays confidence. Composure helps to draw attention and confidence promotes ‘acceptability’ of the person. Nervous-looking candidates fail to evoke a respect for the candidature. But, putting on airs would not win appreciation /acceptance. To emphasize composure, the candidate’s ability to articulate ideas / action /expressions must be on a sound footing. So, one has to acquire these qualities by augmenting knowledge and by organizing the strategies of expression. Appealing styles of presentation accrue to those who handle the language with utmost care. Styles of presentation pertain to apt pronunciation, subtle nuances of phonetics and a comfortable delivery free of ‘hesitant pauses or hasty pushes’.

                         Interview

Interviews are occasions of value to the employer and to the prospective employees. It is not a session to show up ‘what one considers of self’. The panel doing a selection is a group of mature minds, keen in observation and incisive in analysis. Caution shall be the watchword of a jobseeker. Please recognize that your presentation must drive the panel to draw inferences, instead of your making claims of supremacy. Speaking the minimum and ‘to the point’ are the two important approaches forming a part of one’s personality. Often the panelists on an interview are seniors. Candidates should not assume for a moment that the ‘old seniors’ are not abreast of current trends in Industry or Science. Indeed, these senior members are as much alert and their panoramic view is big and wholesome. On the contrary, the young jobseeker may be sound in theory with little or no specific training in operative applications. So, every jobseeker should respond to questions in a manner that is sincere and open. It is not wrong to submit that ‘I do not know much’; please avoid telling ‘I will learn it in no time’. Such utterances reflect poor attitude and calculated gamble to win over the selectors. The bottom line is the jobseeker should reflect ability, politeness of disposition, willingness to learn. These will evoke higher level of admiration from the panelists and would help the candidate in a suitable way. In exercising the caution of modesty, candidates should not sound submissive / slavish or sycophantic which no one likes. Too submissive attitudes throw up wrong signals.

                         Language

Being the vehicle of communication, grammatically correct expressions and neatly framed statements in a language enhance the profile of the candidate. Slangs must be avoided. Answering a question before it is completed is a sign of ‘nervousness’ shielded by eagerness to show off alacrity. All pauses, intonation and pronunciation must be modelled

onthe lines of ‘native speakers’. Never use words that you do not fully understand. Seemingly ‘like’ words do not mean the same. [Judicial/ Judicious, abject /object,

Continuous /continual, pocket /packet, August /august are some instances]. Refining the language skill is an endless pursuit; we have to stay receptive and alert to modalities of expressing ideas.

                         Why language needs attention?

Whatever be a candidate’s credential academically, [s]he gets judged by the way [s]he tries to exhibit skills. Work skills come to the fore only on the floor of work. Much before that, it is the communicative ability that carries the candidate to higher levels of selection or review. So, ‘not getting eliminated’ in the preliminary level is of utmost value to stay in the reckoning. The best strategy is to develop skills of communication to draw and sustain attention on all occasions. Needless to say that knowledge too requires being displayed through legitimate exposition of language[s]. There does not seem to be better alternatives, as the process of communication is the most natural approach of getting across.

Our reference to language skill does not confine itself to English alone; it pertains to every language. As a matter of fact, it is preferable to learn as many languages –both Indian and European, if we wish to look for global avenues. Honestly, there is a dearth of personnel who can handle different languages. Study of language and literature is one of the most productive efforts, since these knowledge domains have far wider applications than what we generally presume. A major advantage to personnel from these streams is, they can readily accept positions without the mental reservation that ‘I am qualified for something else’. Also, they would never feel underemployed as they would find their assignments engaging and rewarding. In making the best of such situations, knowledge of History, Geography and Literature would be a formidable combination in the International arena and Tourism. What matters is proficiency and not the mere glories of degrees or titles.

It should be within our reach to learn some languages of our region, so that we do not suffer even for travel to outside our zone. Among the western languages, French, Spanish, Japanese and German need being learnt if one were to make it to Europe. Of late, efforts to learn Chinese is on the rise, for, it offers scope in USA especially for diplomatic transactions besides trade and commerce.

Summing up, it is vital to remember that knowledge needs to express itself; nothing great can be realized, if knowledge fails to evoke comfort or confidence. Unless the person reveals confidence, the onlooker is not obliged to scrutinize talent and recognize it. Recognition is won by exposition of repertoire. It is never too late to prune language skills. Earnest efforts can open greater chances, provided the candidate makes a candid impact in conversations –formal or informal. Kindly get trained in the nuances of expressing ideas by shaking off the misplaced inhibition.

We do not know when opportunity would come our way; if and when it does, our exhibiition  of ideas must win recognition for the quick-witted communication of zeal and comfort. Therefore, let us acquire all the essential strategies of seizing the opportunity.

As a part of one’s education, looking beyond the horizon of Syllabus is an essential strategy for survival with dignity. Therefore, learning must be strengthened by augmenting functional skills. These pertain to handling situations by logical approach, convincing the persons who matter and conveying any idea with felicity.

OPPORTUNITY

OPPORTUNITY:    MAKING USE OF OPPORTUNITIES

Life is a bundle of opportunities for the discerning. Often the saying ‘opportunity knocks but once’ is a sane advice to remember. It is important to recognize the foregoing suggestions for their value in guiding our approach. In the process, some criteria determine the success ratio of our attempt. Foremost among them is to ‘know’ what opportunity means.

Opportunity:             ‘a chance to progress or for advancement’

‘a time or a set of circumstances  that help to do something’

‘a situation which needs to be appropriately utilized’

Equal opportunity:       ‘an occasion where all persons of a description have the same opportunity,

with no undue favour or discrimination against’.

Opportunity Cost:       ‘Loss of other alternatives when one alternative is chosen’

All these observations merely indicate what an opportunity is; they do not suggest the approaches that may help in grabbing an opportunity or about the methods of ‘reaching a state of readiness’ to do it.

    Preamble

While opportunities appear to be equal, what determines the ‘success’ of the individual is not the opportunity itself; but how best one makes use of the opportunity. If success is our aim, our focus should be on converting a chance into an opportunity. Therefore, personal equipment of the individual matters the most, in making the best of an opportunity. ‘Personal equipment’ goes beyond the common attainments of qualification. That is why equally qualified persons do not succeed equally. Components of ‘personal equipment’ together confer personality on to each individual. Personality includes mental ability and repertoire of a range of abilities. As a part of education, each person should strive to acquire skills that portray a ‘streamlined’ personality by any process of evaluation. Personality building is a useful but complex process of acquiring capabilities of work, disposition, group compatibility and perpetual willingness to learn.

       When to begin personality building?

There is no justification for delaying the process; yes, it should begin here and now and should stay a part of ourselves till we complete our existence. In plain terms non-stop learning is the right technique of glorious development of personality. The instant question is what to learn? The answer is ‘everything’. It begins with ‘ego blasting’ from a humble acceptance that ‘we need to learn a lot and our learning is just in its beginning’. Truly, personality building is based on skill building.

     PARAMETERS OF VALUE IN SKILL-BUILDING

     Observation

Skills are natural and inborn. Yet, it is grooming that prunes the efficacy of skill acquisition. Most valid in skill-building is the process of observation. Observation is a passive learning strategy. All keen observers are good learners and vice-versa. Observation includes the application of receptive faculties of vision, hearing and assessment of facts and their veracity on every occasion. In fact ‘hands on’ training is a session of practising from observation. Critical observation helps to collect proper information. Cultivating the skills of observation is an indirect way identifying, learning and practicing right methods.

         Learning by understanding

Of the different forms of learning, the one through understanding is the best mode. It eliminates the chance of losing from memory; losing from memory is a feature of ‘memorizing’ statements/ data. Memorizing taxes the mind. Also, memorizing does not help to identify ‘connectivity’ between ideas and themes. Therefore, at each step, understanding the information is essential to avoid exhaustion of mind by saturation. In its simplicity, the process of understanding begins from words, meanings and connotations. Mastering those words for situations is a strategy of convincing the listeners/ recipients. Learning becomes enjoyable only if the statements are appropriately understood.  Elegance in presentation makes learning enjoyable and convincing. It simultaneously applies to teacher and taught alike. Also, it is the ease of learning that promotes the desire for elegance. Understanding is the fundamental tool for ‘comprehension’-the ultimate strength in knowledge-seeking.

          Analytic out look

Any idea, information or knowledge can be ‘assimilated’ by analyzing the varied facets of information. It is the true value of education. Only by analysis, right weightage for information can be accorded. Decision-making suffers from bad weightage influencing the analysis. Right component in right quantity is the best combination in any process. As a practice, students must take to analysis as a component of learning; without the support of analysis, knowledge does not lead anywhere. Analysis cannot be added as a secondary element in comprehension. Rather, the degree of comprehension rests on clear analysis. Learning has to be hinged to analysis just as words and spelling are learnt together. So, we need to prompt and promote the culture of analysis as a part of learning. Persons who lay emphasis on to analysis-knowledge ensemble stand greater chance in making the best of an opportunity.

         Presentation

Any effort to make use of an opportunity requires elegant portrayal of an idea. The act of doing it is presentation. It has two components- physical and verbal; the former relates to the ‘appearance’ of the individual and ‘body language’ thereof. The verbal component is an exposition of skill.  Arguments and corroborative evidence must flow in tandem in a natural and lucid style. Assembling of facts must be in a logical sequence to ‘win’ acceptance and appreciation. However, artificial intonation must be scrupulously avoided. Overzealous thrusting of views would prove counterproductive. Acting smart has the risk of inviting deeper scrutiny of ability. Polite expressions with apt terms can tilt balance in our favour.  Impression need not be created; rather it should be derived by observers.

Disposition – a component of presentation

Disposition is an important element of presentation.  Just as we prefer being heard, we should lend attention to what others say, before we try to make a submission. It is a kind of ‘give and take’ orientation with appropriate sharing of viewpoints.  Either staying moot or trying to overpower any other stand point is bound to be considered a negative disposition. By displaying the right blend of response to each important issue on an occasion, the participant convinces the evaluators/ fellow competitors of ‘thoroughness’ in the work undertaken.  Besides these elements of interpersonal nature, willingness to consider every view point is taken as a positive feature. On all such moments, the style of language employed matters the most; avoidance of slang, inappropriate expressions and terms of regional dialect is the best strategy of proving a ‘cultured’ attitude in interaction.

JUGGLERY OF WORDS

                                                    JUGGLERY OF WORDS

Before explaining the present idea, it is profitable to recognize utility of words and their application. So, effective communication rests on the articulate play of words.  For such an effort familiarity of terms and their usage comes in handy. Persons who equip themselves stand a good chance of impressive performance often if not always.

While a jewellery store has stocks of jewel varied in form, design, appeal and preferences by culture, jugglery is a play of ideas, words and semantics. A lot depends on how a person chooses to present an idea by play of word[s].

Mean is a common word; but being common we need not mean that the word is mean by importance. This word has connotations. What do we mean by this? I mean that it is not mean in significance. By what means do you say so could be a logical poser. My answer would be ‘by all means’.  Did I mean much as I employed the plural ‘means’. The term ‘means’ means income, method, resource, action and strategies thereof, though ‘means’ is not a plural, as it can be treated as a singular as well. So what it means to use ‘means’ depends on what a person means to signify. All the time one need not dwell on ‘means’ as a means of communicating an idea as the possibility of the user being dubbed ‘mean’ in his/her vocabulary. Being mean in the context suggests not being rich in vocabulary. ‘Mean’ can also imply average or petty minded disposition to others. So it means that one can ill afford to look mean, these days with all the means at our disposal to equip our skills. I trust, you do not mind availing of the means to enrich personal skills of communication.

There are different opportunities to juggle. One can quickly juggle words to both delight and dismay the listener[s]. One person said “after all, language is just for communication”. I retorted ‘no, it is for just communication”. By just changing the place of the word ‘just’ in the statement, I implied greater justice for the language. The poor man, so poor in articulation that he had a triumphant look that a senior person just repeats what ‘I said to him –seconds ago’. ‘Just’ can be just juggled just like that if one knows how just to play it. Just a minute -a common expression and just apply and leave it to God have far differing indications, just as ‘give me just an answer and give me a just answer are different by their implication. So, none can just brush aside the value of ‘just’ as a just a filler while ‘just’ must enjoy legitimate justification.

Look at these:

I shall give you my presentation. When?  Presently. Why not tomorrow-the day of my wedding?  Then, I have another presentation, so I prefer doing it now.  If you give your presentation now itself, what would you do for tomorrow. Oh!  That is a lecture presentation and I cannot hand it over to anyone.  So, some presentations are delivered and some are handed over as gift.

Hope I presented what I can and abrogated your time indeed, by word and deed!

SENIOR CITIZENS

SENIOR CITIZENS

Senior citizens constitute an enigmatic lot in our country. Why enigmatic? They are simultaneously wanted and unwanted; it sounds bizarre isn’t it? This anomaly is a product of attitude. The attitude crystallizes itself from immediate requirements within the family or the office for some persons. Largely, it is the filial generation which exercises the choice to have or not to have the grand ma / grand pa as free baby sitters sans the attendant risks of guarding the house and property by engaging commercial services. For them, the grand ma / grand pa are angels. After 4 years or so the same persons view angels as demons and would desire that the grandparents leave their fold for some other place. Now the house does not need baby sitters. Thus their attitude changes from positive to negative value.

Another swing from negative to positive value obtains in some establishments like manufacturing or marketing systems. The old man heading a section was viewed with contempt [till recently] for his piercing penetration into details of work -execution and ‘ready to pounce’ killer instinct of his for reprimanding the junior  workers. He is now retired and the junior workers heave a sigh of relief. Suddenly when senior management officials threaten of an inspection to the branch, panic grips the branch as all data are not kept coordinated. Now the retired senior looks a God for re-organizing the data and accounts, if they were to escape the wrath of higher officials. By the evening the important personnel from the branch flock the old man’s house and sheepishly ask for his help to set things right. Much to their awe and delight, the old man restores order from chaos within three days and refuses to take anything in return saying ‘ after all my family survives because of this system’. It is his [senior man’s] loyalty which comes to the rescue of all in a crisis.

Why is a ‘flip-flop’ attitude shown to senior citizens?

The answer is simple and straight forward, as the seniors too have flip-flop disposition towards juniors [office] and younger members [family]. When they handle tender children they are affectionate and soft-spoken.  When the child prefers a certain eatable, the old [wo] man reprimands the kid and parents alike even if some guests are around. [S]he further destroys cordiality by sermonizing with adage-like expression “in our days our parents …………….”.   It instantly works havoc between members of the family, with a prospect of landing selves in some distant old age home precluding the chance of visiting the house frequently. It is indiscretion which ruins cordiality.  But, the present day senior citizens are less offensive in their utterances, though they do not ‘see’ eye to eye with youngsters on every issue.

Why this pattern in behaviour?

A decisive key to this love-hate disposition among elders is traceable to the early grooming of the present seniors in their formative days. There was joint family system of all cousins, parents and their wards – all under one roof. There were only two categories – elders and children. With no barrier of any kind any elder can reprimand any child irrespective of parentage. It was freedom endowed if not granted. Most of the time kids were under one or other caretaker with no freedom of any kind enjoyed by the present day children. Such regimented upbringing resulted in men and women who are tradition –bound with no tolerance for worldly trends, entertainments or even items like fast-food. Those seniors would settle for fasting than try a variety of fast-food. In the process a typical mind set of ‘what I say alone is correct’ got entrenched with no one contesting any argument. To raise an argument against any senior was regarded nearest to sin. This expanded to all domains including workplaces.

Remedy not far to seek

All our life we keep learning. We need to learn handling the generation a little away from our own. Just politely explain the intended idea instead of summarily discarding the other point of view as irrelevant. Also, let us keep in mind that everything is in for a change including our own looks. Change is inevitable and any rigid posture can cause fissures and friction. Let is try to take things in the stride.

Let youngsters be affirmed that elderly utterances are drawn from experience bigger than our age. All they [elders] suggest are meant to serve timely caution from pitfalls. Also, despite poor wages the elders served the same system all their life as a mere gratitude to the employer. SUCH LOYALTIES ARE SADLY THINGS OF THE PAST.  Never please ignore the sentiment of elders who never wish anything bad for any kid. May be they do not articulate the opinion to convince you in a language comfortable to you; that does not in the least mean  anything bad for youth. Also keep in mind, in a few years from now your son or daughter may raise similar revolt to your ‘then’ orientation to them. Human mind has moved through the same corridors through every millennium. So your grand pa, grand ma nor we as grand children are any different.

Be that as it may, let us learn to enjoy the warmth of generations old or young as living is synonymous with peace and dignity.

Good luck                                                            Prof. K. Raman

ALMA MATER -II

ALMA MATER- II

Life goes on almost in a steady course. Any study schedule comes to an end in a span of say -5 years in that system. They enter different systems for study or employment and face “life”.

All those people who were bitterly [re]viewed now appear better in the light of our new “life”. Those whom we thought had no value for us, still come to our mind and what they did to help our study earlier, slowly turns respectable. This is about the average relationship between people on a campus. Some who had earlier impressed us in classroom or laboratory or library become greater in our esteem and we recall their thought every now and then. When we meet our old friends, we faithfully discuss old happenings and seem to agree on many things and depart with a sad feeling that the “earlier life” would not return. As years roll by your value for the alma mater gets entrenched and enhanced and you long to go there. When you get a chance you would certainly go there. You would always look for known faces. Rarely, you locate all of those whom you had known.  Some of them are not there, the others we are unable to readily recognize. Time has played on them to a point of thorough change. Only a few are recognizable with symptoms of aging. Once, they spot you, they enquire of your welfare and details of your position, place, family and request you to be visiting. You keep on trying to gather information of your old associates but gather very little and vague ideas.

With a feeling of your sense of belonging, you look a stranger in ‘your own home’. But you are happy and sad. If one or two teachers are still there you would try to meet them and painfully remind them of your batch and the few mistakes you committed to them        They receive you with pleasure and console you saying “those days of respect for teachers and the affectionate students are gone”. They too suggest ‘you to visit as often’.

        The paradox:

We know our alma mater every inch. But we cherish visiting the place, though aware of many things. You know your friends / associates/ respected teachers have left the scene.

Still you want to be there; look at those same old buildings ‘replaying’ within, your old truant with friends and teachers and how you took some of them for a ride. Your present maturity makes you regret for that bygone incident. Certainly it is not the empty class rooms and halls you peep in. It is your mental bondage to these structures through the then human relations that you cherish your alma mater. Even if none of your acquaintance is there, you would not hesitate telling the people there that you are an old student. They would also receive you but the bondage would not be there. So, dear friends an alma mater is not brick mortar, but flesh and blood for the individual who cherishes it.

        Thank you.                                                                  Prof. K. Raman

ALMA MATER

ALMA MATER

Alma mater is a respectable entity. It is a system that has a place of value in everyone’s life. I have used the terms entity and system, while referring to the alma mater. I do not wish to confine the magnitude to a smaller territory like a School / College / University. All of them have the simultaneous status of Alma mater to anyone. This recognition of an alma mater, as a place of learning fits a logical / legal status to it.  The significance or its value to a person is something beyond the assessment by any one else. What I try to explain is every alma mater is a treasure by itself, irrespective of any social value like history of antiquity / tradition, location, popularity with the natives and so on. Frankly it is the esteem shown by an individual to a chosen system that attributes the value. Interestingly, an individual may cherish the School or College[s] or the University more as a place of esteem. Very rarely one gets an opportunity in life where all the three vie with one another for places of esteem as alma mater. I trust I have brought you to the focal point of determining the esteem. It is not the legal right; but one’s affection to an institution that creates the sense of belonging. What one cherishes is important in this.

The sense of belonging:

Why is it that a person wishes to associate his /her life with a particular institution? Basically, it is a form of happy respect that one wishes to acknowledge to the institution.

But, this tendency manifests itself more in later life than during the period of study. Quite a bit of culture holds the key. Human mind recalls the things with which one cannot interact at will. Nostalgia of association sweeps across delightfully and puts you back at those places where you honestly love to be. But now you can not physically be there.

This condition slowly magnifies itself. From a sense of belonging you reach a state of longing.  What is that you try to do there? You have nothing in particular. But, your mind wants it.

What is so interesting about your alma mater? You may not be able to pinpoint. Unconsciously it all happened and you are “now” aware that you were groomed there. Grooming did not take place at only the school or College or University. But, we do not concede value to all the three. It is exactly the point for us to recognize. Only in some place the environment suits your attitude. You seem to learn more and in delight. You could gather memorable friends. The ambience permitted the freedom of activity that you enjoy / the facilities that helped you acquire skills or knowledge. Some or all of these drive one to cherish the memories and retain them for ever. So, it is not just some place. All people know the place. Some cherish it as a respectable place – the alma mater. The bondage develops under a set of conditions exclusive to the individual. It is a complex cluster of experiences which help to develop the bondage. But every institution is held in esteem by a vast population of students who went through the stream there.

How it happens?

To develop the bondage that we cherish, one has to like ‘that’ system. It shapes itself in to a magnitude based on several things that the individual relishes. Though one may have likes and dislikes, every one accommodates to the ambience and soon recognizes the companions. They share their opinions, review their teachers, imitate them, nickname them and also clearly distinguish the utility of these teachers.

MOTIVATION - III

MOTIVATION - III

These may be within an individual or may spread between a set of people. A basic condition that determines the intertwined-triggers of inspiration and motivation is interaction. Motivation begins as inspiration, expands as respect, entrenches as commitment and expresses as performance. None of the electronic gadgetry can fine tune these human elements of quality sustenance.

Why all these painstaking exercises?   To be really successful, a combination of such qualities is ideal. Successful persons do not give up. They rise to meteoric proportions. It is easy to recognize that only successful persons can really and unconsciously motivate.

At the very outset, I have begun with the oft-repeated poser as to how people can be motivated. My firm belief is that, motivation should spring from an urge to become competent. I suggest that no one should consciously attempt to motivate others. The most effective way of skillful motivation is to be a stringent adherent to processes and procedures/ practices of perfection in our daily activity. It is wiser not to discuss about any of the efforts that you have put in to achieve perfection. All persons are excellent judges of others. They would unfailingly judge our merits. The steadfast regularity in our approaches would induce at least a few to think. Let them think; do not offer suggestions of any type. Self-induced thought process is much more sustaining and incisive. It will set forth analytical approaches in the recipient. It is not necessary that the response should be the same in all. Please remember, only those of a wavelength are susceptible. It is not for us to spot such people. They would try to associate with our line of approach. Let not any of these get in to our head.

Let it permanently be clear that our duty is the prime concern and motivating others should occur on its own. The sheer commitment visible in a person’s attitude to work brings about an impact. Some love it, some enjoy it, some show a sense of awe, some to start with rate you for an odd entity [but later somehow amend their attitude] and ultimately everyone realizes the value of serious commitment. But all of these efforts should be pure and honest without the intention of putting up appearances of serious efforts. I make it clear that the entire exercise would not be easy and it would be the nearest to proverbial “catch” of the tiger’s tail. We can never afford to relax. Some systematic training in the early part of one’s career would render the right ambience and all critics would pale into insignificance.

But,  patient cultivation of an edifice takes time and effort. Let us not fritter our energy trying to answer critics; they are more keen of questioning – a job that delights them. That we are a focal point of criticism is testimony to our relevance. After all, Shakespeare, Shelly, Milton and a host of creative thinkers have had this.  Criticism from better persons deserves concern and attention. Let us ignore the ignorant and crystallize our efforts to be useful persons. Certainly we have our niche where others dare not enter. But, let us be genuinely sincere.

Lastly what comes to my mind is “God helps those who help themselves”. If you are a non-believer, please remember that no force on earth can mute the glories of sincere effort nor can suppress honesty.                                                                                                                        Prof .   K.
