4 SQUEAL, SEQUEL, SEQUENCE, CONSEQUENCE
The above are some
terms that seem to be cousins in their
own right of ‘letters’ in their structuring. Unless we are clear of their
implications , we may have to face the ignominy of uncharitable criticism from
even far less competent mortals.
Let us critically
distinguish these terms for their precise significance as expressions of ideas.
SQUEAL
Squeal refers to a noise of
glee or anger or disappointment revealed through an abrupt loud voice by kids ;
these may indicate delight on seeing a doll or dolls or upon dispossessing them
of such play items/ toys or for dressing
them up with some clothes much against their will.
SEQUEL
Sequel indicates something
like a follow-up or continuation of some earlier thing ; sometimes we come
across persons who choose to continue the work of some predecessor or author or
a painter whose earlier work is unfinished or leaves scope of being continued
in different lines [especially of films/novels or stories that enjoyed wide
readership]. Sometimes such items numbered II or III may also be done by the
one who presented the item I .Thus a sequel is either an extension of something or a new line of
thought inspired by an earlier work.
SEQUENCE
Sequence generally means the
order in which events or things happened or are arranged one after another. In
otherwords the varied events or items in a sequence may imply logical
continuity or necessarily by the order 1,2, 3, 4 …………n. In order that
a narrative appeals tangible , the facts presented therein ought to be
in a congruous positioning –the right sequence.
CONSEQUENCE
Consequence
means some effect or result of something else [more or less in a ‘cause and
effect relationship]. Other aspects of the expression include”significance’’
/’worth’ which is derived from some earlier act or event. If an act or
utterance cannot bring off any effect –good or bad, it is said to be
“Inconsequential” It thus folows that if one knows that something would be inconsequential, it is
wiser to desist action or utterance to avoid loss of time. Better have a good
day of consequence .

ReplyDeleteDifference between sequel and consequence?
ReplyDeleteSequel and sequele same?
ReplyDeleteDr Sir,
ReplyDeleteSequel is a continuation as in Ponniyin selvan I and II OR INDHIYAN I and II ; where as Sequela is the out come of something as in Dental caries/previous injury or pathological history/
Consequence is an effect while sequel is merely an occurrence as in Hindu wedding LIKE jAANA VAASAM, KAASI YAATHRA , MAANGALYA DHAARANAM
Thanks, Raman, for your clarification.
