Capacity building -4
Interview and the care there of:
Interviews are
convened to identify one or more individuals suitable for the requirement. In
certain situations, the preliminary screening is assigned to agencies
professionalizing in identifying the prospective competitors suitable for the
functional profiles prescribed by Employer to be. So, the competitors have to
pass through the sifting by primary selectors before they enter higher levels
of competition. Persons with angularities of approach face rough edges and may
not glide in comfort like those of pleasant disposition backed by refined
skills of presentation.
An interview serves an occasion for studying the skills, personality and disposition of candidates to other constituents of an ambience. There are mechanisms to monitor attitudes of job seekers waiting in the lounge for their turn. Agencies silently observe the personal idiosyncrasies of candidates while there are no officials around.
The seemingly meaningless waiting is an occasion to check endurance and orderly
conduct among equals. On such occasions, Journals and news papers are left for
visitors to stay engaged. Sensible handling of them is a trait under
observance. Never keep chatting in the lounge session prior to interview, even
if your friends are in fair number.
Do not indulge
in gossip with peons and menial staff
of the organization in an attempt to elicit information about the top brass of
the organization and other details like to whom the top brass is amenable. With
well compensating employers, canvassing will prove counter productive in the
long run.
At the interview, just answer to the point, to the person raising the question and in the same language that the question came in. Do not ever stare at someone known to you on the panel. For well known answers, do not display undue enthusiasm and over step the terms of reference. More than irritating the interviewer, it would invite sterner questions putting you in awkward, defenceless spot cringing for mercy.
Panelists with so much experience up the sleeve can trap you in a mess, if you try acting over smart. Use only refined ways of expressions as- ‘beg your pardon’ or ‘may I have the benefit of a repeat please’, ‘may I beg to differ from you?’ instead of blunt rebuttals. Wait until your documents are called; do not force your certificates on them.
What is an
achievement to you may not impress them. Try to leave a set of photocopies
[your documents] with the panel both as a gesture and a polite signal of your
confidence in your track record. Thank the panel for the opportunity before
taking leave and extend an arm of courtesy to members before you come out of the
chamber. These are some outward symbols of dynamism and assurance that
strengthen your candidature.
GOOD LUCK
