LEARNERS-PLEASE NOTE
So far I have largely been referring more to teacher roles and
occasionally to student needs. It is logical to consider that learner is
perhaps the most vital stakeholder in the process of learning. Obviously, the
student ought to devote very serious attention to the process.
Does such an approach or attitude pervade our Schools and Colleges? I do not for a moment imagine that all is well with our institutions intended to be portals of quality learning.
Several irrelevant digressions have not only
set in but have entrenched themselves deep and firm thanks to some systematic
tolerance bordering on negligence and
the issue has become systemic and for them what merits uppermost consideration
is blind profiteering , though institutions keep propagating the image of their being
a legacy in imparting quality education over the decades. Despite claims of decades
of serving education, quite a few are sadly homes for decadence too.
The issues behind the decadence are quite complex with a fair share of
blame for all stake holders – Institutions, Government authority, Parents,
Teachers and Students. Though, at the tail end of the list Students stand the
impact of outcome more than any other constituent stakeholder in the process of
education.
Because of my frankness, many dismiss my opinion as either ‘out dated’ or
‘not in tune with times’. My conviction
being what it is, I cannot settle for inferior approaches and shortcuts that
bless and foment the plague-like syndrome of ‘high scores’ sans comprehension.
The score-centric focus on education/ learning /teaching has come in
handy for every stake holder to exploit the social trend to personal advantage
causing incalculable damage to the fabric of human resource development and its
value to the task of nation-building.
No country can afford to breed a large repository of sheep-like flocks of
men and women incapable of right skills of thought and action. Aiming at tall
scores alone is the surest way to deprive any one of his or her ability to
gather, infer, interpret and forecast the likely happenings ahead.
Such facets of mental acumen owe themselves to the singular ability named
comprehension. Comprehension in arriving at a solution is a
terminal product churned out by a set of mental exercises using a range of
reliable parameters by excruciating efforts to choose the best-fit options in a
given situation. Where our stakeholders lose sight of issues deserve a detailed
survey if not analysis.
