Oh Language –8

 Oh Language –8

Some other words that have more meanings to specific situations can be considered for the day’s blog posting. Continuing from where we left last time the list reads as under.

Fish, Fine, Firm, Last, Lie,  Match, Nail, Order, Paint, Ring, Spring , Time, Use, Wit and so on.

Fish is a reference one or members of a specific variety of fish, implying that the word serves to mean both singular and plural as in Furniture, Equipment etc.

Fish can refer to a ‘good-looking’ girl or a new comer to a school

It can refer to habitual drinking, saying ‘[s]he drinks kike a fish’.

Any shady [unhealthy] practice is denounced saying ‘something fishy’ about it.

Fine has different effects. It may mean state of perfect setting or health or looks as indication of quality.

Fine is used also to indicate penalty for violation

Firm –a reference to some company or business.

Firm can imply ‘physical rigidity’

Firm can be used indicate the most reliable help or support as in ‘firm commitment’.

Last is used to mean the position [the last seat or compartment]

Last can be used to suggest ‘durability’ as in ‘these materials LAST long’

Lie can mean being in horizontal position.

Lie also means ‘falsehood’.

Match is a reference to a competition in a game or sport between teams.

Match can also mean finding suitable partner for wedding.

In India ‘Match’ is used to indicate finding fabric of near appearance for a larger fabric like a Saree or similar garment.

Nail refers to a metallic pin used to ‘bind’ two pieces together.

Nail can also mean blocking a progress as in ‘The judge nailed any further argument by invoking the provision in the law to stop meandering arguments fabulously raised just to confuse the jury.

Order                                                                                                                    The term may mean the state of being well organized as in “Everything is in order for the official ceremony”.

Order can also suggest the issuance or promulgation of a specific rule to preempt any untoward unruly happening. Eg.‘Shoot at sight’ order is issued

These 8 terms presented are in day-to-day use. But, we do not ponder over as to their functional relevance elsewhere though all are well-versed with such usages.

Hope all words presented so far and the explanations there of are easy to grasp. Still my old call for the meaning of “intelligible” hangs rather perilously with no desire to look at it by our friends though they are intelligent enough to decipher the term “intelligible”. Am I intelligible?

Wait for more
