Administer, Abide, Can, Due, Enter, Fan,   Fine , Fit   

Administer

Normally ‘administer’ means to govern or control or  ensure appropriate action in maintaining smooth functioning of a system/ office/ institution.

Another important aspect of the term is, to suggest application of or applying a certain procedure.

The doctor administered a new drug through injection.

The governors administer the ‘oath of office’ to all the elected members of the legislative body

Abide

The term refers to the step of ‘working by guideline’ or follow a directive’ as in “The employees shall abide by the stipulations on work hours till a new pattern is announced”. 

‘Abiding’ indicates ‘a long association’ as in “His abiding interest for movies is too well known”.

Can [verb]

Can indicates the ability to do a thing as in “I can swim” or “I can write a book in a fortnight’s time”

‘Can’ may imply ‘being allowed to” as in ‘you can park your vehicle in our garage’

Can [noun] is a reference to a metal container that can store a liquid.

Due

‘Due’ is a reference to expectation as in ‘Elections are due by next May’.

‘Due’  can imply a condition or ‘because of’ . Some flights have been cancelled due to dense fog in the region.       

Due may also suggest something yet to come by or happen-- as in “The municipal authorities have notified that All dues to the civic corporation be settled before March 6th 2026”.

‘Due’ can be used to indicate ‘deserved or legitimate’ as in “With due respects to all seniors …….. ”

Enter

The term ‘enter’ has different meanings; some of them are:

As we enter the West Street we find a Nursing home to our right. ‘Enter’ as used in the statement means reaching a specific area.  

Enter can indicate ‘joining’ as in “He entered into an argument with the neighbour. Grammar Pundits say ‘enter’ is enough to indicate gaining access to a place and for taking part in a quarrel or argument ‘enter into’ is the grammatically correct form.

Enter may also refer to the act of furnishing information as in “Please enter your details in these columns”.

Fan

Fan is commonly understood as a device to deliver ‘air’ and help to drive the heat away in a place.

Fan, also is a reference to a person who admires someone for the latter’s ability/talent.

Fan, can indicate deliberate efforts as in “The Newspaper tries to ‘fan’ hate among people of the region by cryptic articles about religions”   

Fine

The term ‘fine’ is such a fine word that it serves a variety of fine situations.

‘Fine’ is generally used to mean “all is well with one’s day-to-day functioning”

‘Fine’ [when expressed in response to a question on wellbeing]  suggests a state of good health of the respondent

‘Fine’ may refer to some ‘penal fee’ levied for non-compliance of a standing order or stipulation.

Fit

‘Fit’ has a range of meaningful applications –as under

‘Fit’ is a reference to trim physical state of a person.     

‘Fit’ simply means ‘being of correct size/ shape’ as in ‘The dress fits him” 

‘Fit’ is a way of suggesting suitability as in “He is fit for the job of teaching”

‘Fit’ can refer to uncontrollable burst of cough /laughter/ anger [rage] etc.  In a fit of rage, he pelted stone on the street light.

‘Fit’ can mean a state of epileptic seizure as in ‘he develops ‘fits’ under fear or emotional disturbance.

To me, it now appears fit to ask our blog friends, if the present write-up has been intelligible or not
