Oh Language –14

 Oh Language –14

Needless to recall the purpose of these Sunday blog postings-I beliecve. Proceed

Spring, Swing, Swivel, Take ,  Usurp , Union,

Spring  may mean different things

Basically a coiled wire that can be stretched by pull is named a ‘Spring’

Spring may imply ‘unexpected’ or ‘sudden’ occurrence as in “Movie villains can spring a surprise on the hero or heroine.

Spring is one of the seasons in temperate regions as in “Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter [Fall]”

Spring can mean the natural emergence of water from the ground store.

Swing

A fixed seat like object that can move back and forth; its action is ‘swinging’.

Swing can mean ‘change or shift’ as in “Electoral prospects reveal a swing in favour of ‘X’.

‘Swing’ was a kind of dance in the early half of the twentieth century

Swivel

Swivel is a kind of movement around a central point especially in viewing [eye movement around a central spot]

Swivel is a facility to help chained animals to move around without suffocation from the risk of chain or rope tightly getting wound around the neck. Actually of the two halves in a swivel,  one stays in place and the link rotates freely preventing the chance of chocking the neck of the animal .

Take

Take is used to say ‘pick up’ something.

Take may refer to the step or the activities in shooting a scene for a movie.

Take may imply ‘accept’ as in “one can take credit for all genuine efforts”

Take may suggest inability as in “I can’t take it lying low”

Take can mean verify as in “Take stock of the situation”.

Take may imply ‘establishing’ as in “All plans take roots only by sincere efforts.

There are several other occasions for using ‘take’

Usurp

Usurp is commonly a reference to take control of a place or activity without authority to do so /Eg. Often civil leadership thrown out by military coup.[The military usurps the power to administer the state or land]. Usurpation is drastically different from ‘Abrogation’ which is a process of ending a contract or an agreement.

Union

Union can mean the state of being held together.

Union refers to a group of persons coming together to safeguard their interests as in a trade union.

Union can mean pieces of land being administered by a general leadership or by some common characteristics as in the erstwhile ‘Soviet Union’ or European Union with a common currency.

Sometimes marriage is defined as a union of two people.

Hope the terms and their relevance to varied occasions are clear and intelligible.
