Oh Language- 26

 Oh Language- 26

Well, with language as an item of discussion, it is a wide canvas to learn from and also recognize how ‘small’ one is if what is available and how much of it is known to self are dispassionately checked. I hasten to add that ‘no one can safely assume’ to lead anyone else as profound possibilities for the latter to be a source to learn from cannot be ruled out. . Either way the exercise is a delight if enrichment is the accepted criterion. Keeping these features in mind if we approach the topic, our need would be satisfied and our comprehension can be toned up by recognizing the innate intricacies of the language. The present effort is to consider the ‘utility’ of a word in satisfying several requirements that the language demands.

Account

The term may mean different things.

An ‘Account’ may refer to the money holdings of a person in a bank or Post Office or Financial institution. The holder of the account has freedom to operate within certain stipulations including to abide by service charges, number of withdrawals in a given period etc.,

Account

In another context ‘Account’ would mean a detailed statement arranged in proper order as in “Give an account of your experience from your recent visit to Germany’. It seeks a clear, sequential narration of the most important aspects of the trip to Germany. By implication, all critical details regarding travel, stay, general perception about the place and its people are expected from the report.

By your own account

Is a common usage to sum up something even as it indicates the statement is accepted as in ‘By your own account you had a few hundred rupees in your wallet that was pocket-picked in a crowded bus.

‘On account of ’

Is an expression to mean ‘because of ’ as in ‘Yesterday’s Cricket match was called off ‘on account of ’ heavy rain.

Amount

The term ‘Amount’ is generally a quantity or volume of something - as in ‘what an amount of time he spent for completing the painting’ means the person spent a long time for completing the painting. The statement implies  Time-consuming effort.

Amount

Amount may mean the quantum of money as in’ The total amount involved in completing the project was Rs. 85 lakh .

Amount may refer to the ‘extent or intensity of ‘of something as in “Any amount of persuasion cannot modify her decision’ meaning that she would not listen to persuasion however serious it may be .  There are several such possibilities where, ‘amount’ may imply a a particular feature.

‘Amounts to’

It nearly means ‘equal to’  or ‘not different from’

It indicates a situation ‘nearly equivalent to’   as in ‘It amounts to your being the manager of the organization. [The person is not designated to be ‘Manager’ but carries out the ‘duties of a Manager’.

To continue…….
