The plant is a climber
–studded with thorns and prickles. Though a small herb, it is widely known for
its medicinal value. Leaves are fresh
green with spines and lobed [3 or 5 lobes in each leaf].
It is a well-known
medicinal herb and various parts [root, stem and leaves] are used to treat
several disorders.
In Tamil nadu, it is a
well-known remedy for respiratory ailments [Asthma, Bronchitis] and cough.
Digestion-related
problems like constipation, Indigestion and Diarhhoea are treated using the
leaves of S.trilobatum
S.trilobatum
leaves
are used to treat hepatitis [jaundice].But, for handling jaundice Phyllanthus
niruri [keezhaanelli] is more popular. Alkaloids, flavonoids, Terpenoids and Saponins
are known from the herb S.trilobatum.
The plant has high
pharmaceutical value by providing antidotes for Cancer, Inflammation,
microbes[antimicrobial] and anti-oxidant activity.
In short the plant has
a range of medicinal values important for human health.
