Facing Examinations- [DETAILS III]

Facing Examinations-        [DETAILS III]

1] A WOMAN WITHOUT HER MAN IS A SAVAGE.    2 Yesterday I only   beat him

Try punctuating the statement 1 and in 2] ] alter the place of ‘only’ and see how several different meanings or senses emerge and render different effects, as words come to different alignments.

Reference material

At collegiate level, students should rely more on text, since textual presentation is the nearest to the original. Normally, texts are assembled by subject experts; so, they are more authentic than some reference materials marketed as ‘notes’. In an effort to simplify statements, sometimes notes tend to distort information. Referring to more authentic pieces of work is a superior academic practice, especially for improving vocabulary, knowledge and enhancing our abilities of comprehension. If difficulties are encountered, use of standard Dictionaries can offer the right support to understand terms and their usage. In due course, one gets to grasp better styles of writing and get over the inherent fear for using other languages.  Gadgets like Computer, references –Dictionary/Atlas provide authentic help in learning. Since these are items for independent use, anyone can possess and utilize them. All of them help us to improve our language skills.    By systematic use of these, the learner’s profile registers wider acceptability for the sheer efforts undertaken.

Condition your memory

Memory is a useful faculty, if kept fresh. Systematic use of the faculty by recalling information is a healthy practice for keeping it alert and tidy. To remember information, associational memory is helpful; By relating a term to some ‘easy to remember’ place or event, one can keep the term in a quick retrieval mode. By constant practice, more such information can be stored. The exercise does not saturate the power of retention. Care has to be bestowed on to the principle of not memorizing any piece of information. Thus, memory can be kept sharp and ready to respond.

Time Management in Examinations

As far as possible, the number of questions required to be answered shall be honoured on every occasion. Such an approach helps to maximize the scope for higher scores. There is no point in answering one question in exhaustive style and doing partial justice to other questions. More or less, a balanced treatment of varied questions is indicative of ‘well prepared’ state of mind. Such answer scripts enjoy acceptability of the examiner as of displaying seasoned approach to examination. Always try to furnish answers to questions in the same order as they appear in the question paper. Though there are no rigid stipulations for answer sequence, answers in an order do not fatigue the examiner. It is a positive help as it helps the examiner to make correct entries in the score sheet. Before answering questions, assess the possibility of making the best answers and choose to answer from the well known to the lesser known answers. It conveys the sense of seriousness on our part.  Accord judicious weight to questions as per the maximum marks prescribed for each. However, bring out the most salient points to convey the essence of the theme.   Please avoid treating all questions alike [say–Essays, answers long/medium/short].
