PHOTOGRAPHY -33
An Eye Game
In order that photos draw attention
and appreciation of viewers , the photo ‘says’ something to the viewer . That
is the innate advantage of a picture over that of any descriptive writing. If
so, what contributes to the ‘life’ in a picture? In one word the criterion is ‘presentation’.
Yes, how a photographer makes the viewer recognize the ‘suggested information’
lies in registering an emotion at its most candid moment –say some accident or
act of brutality or massive casualty from out break of epidemic/ quake and so
on. So, the person [the photographer ] chooses to ‘frame’ a view which
captivates the viewers’ sympathy for a suffering. Is it all the time a skill
that drives the point home? Or is there something else of parallel significance
to the ‘Eye Game’?
Sure –the equipment has a say in
immortalizing a moment by showcasing the critical moment seving the ‘life’ in a
picture. The term ‘equipment’ connotes more than one thing as it tries to
suggest the efficiency of the photo equioment in picking up details intended or
even the ones not thought of. In several crime scenes objects faithfuly
recorded turn out to be vital clues in tracing the culprit/ motive or
pre-meditation for committing a crime etc. In the process, varied lenses offer
excellent support for collecting details , especially when the area is cordoned
off pending investigation by experts. Quite some facts can be carefully brought
together from photos that seve to ‘document’ all objects on the scene.
The extent of ‘cordoning off’ of the
area determines which kind of optics are pressed into use. If a wider territory
is declared sterile [no freedom of entry for general public other than
investigators] Telephoto lenses may prove ideal to cull out details by
concentrating over small areas to bringout details of items shattered or strewn
–as suggestive of ‘impact’ and possibly the likely sources like explosive
container [s] or high pressure cylinders etc. .
If some boulder-like pits indicate
the damage , possibly a wide-angle may prove effective to capture the entire
boulder with all debris and the nature of materials that have ‘caved in’ in
response to major dislocation fron underneath.
On all such occasions, the
photographer should encompass an emotional attitude to capture details of
likely cause and unabated empathy for the life trapped in misery from the least
expected catastrophy. Those armed with mental acumen go about recording all
visual information in as many formats and visual documentations like photos,
videos or transparencies that can be spread across the globe through varied
outlets are really acknowledged for their spontanety
Alertness is the first requirement
for photography by being ready to plunge into action in any part of the day or
night but without casting to winds one’s own personal safety by uncalled for
dare-devilry of sorts. Normally such photo teams include at least 2 persons-
one making pictures while the other sends off reports to News Agencies.
Equipment in the true sense, as ever
means –Gadgets and mental state of preparedness and quick wit for taking the
best decision in the least time.
