We continue our weekly exercise of
‘dabbling’ with words ‘seemingly alike’ but unconnected in meaning.
PATROL and PETROL
Patrol [verb] refers to the
activity of ‘monitoring’ an area for events of traffic, insurgency or smuggling
certain items across a line.
Petrol [noun] is the liquid fuel
used in automobiles.
PUMP and BUMP
Pump [noun] is a device to drive
liquid or gas from a container to another recipient chamber like engine.
Bump [verb] is the act of hitting
hard on a surface.
SWEEP and SWIPE
Sweep [verb] that refers to the act
of cleaning a surface and remove dust.
Swipe [verb] refers to the
application of force along a sideways direction as in starting a touch screen
phone.
CHOIR and COIR
Choir [noun] A term that refers to
a team or group of people singing religious verses in a place of worship.
Coir [noun] refers to the dense
mass of fibre in coconut ;used to make ropes, mats for floor .
SQUARE and SQUIRE
Square [noun] a 4 sided area where
all 4 sides are equal with 90 degree union at all the corners.
Squire [noun] used as a respectful
term for a person of higher social class or status.
BAZAAR and BIZARRE
Bazaar [noun] is a market place or
a street of shops.
Bizarre [adjective] refers to
strange/ unusual look or expression or idea.
DESERT and DESSERT
Desert [noun] is a geographical
area ,expansive, rich in sand /rocks with poor rainfall and a sparse plant
cover.
Dessert [noun] a name for a
post-meal item of ice cream with nuts cream/chocolate etc.
PRICE and PRIZE
Price [noun] refers to the payable value
of an item of purchase
Prize [noun] is a reward in
appreciation of work/ effort / success
COURSE and COARSE
Course [noun] refers to a plan of
study leading to a degree or qualification.
Coarse [adjective] refers to the
texture of a fabric- generally rough to feel.
BRAKE and BREAK
Brake [noun] =a device that can
retard the speed of a vehicle and bring it to a halt as in automobiles/
locomotives etc.
Break [verb] an act that causes
discontinuity of a structure by damage. Break can refer to intermission as in
lunch hour.
CEILING and SEALING
Ceiling [noun] the inner surface of
the roof as viewed from inside the building.
Sealing [noun] refers to the act of
hunting ‘seals’. It can also refer to the process of completely covering an
item by sealing it. His fate was sealed means all options were closed .
