Acorus calamus [Tam: vasambu ]
A herb that grows to
about 2 feet and has prominent leaves
Vacha (Acorus calamus Linn.
(Acoraceae)) is a traditional Indian medicinal herb, which is used to treat a
wide range of health ailments, including neurological, gastrointestinal,
respiratory, metabolic, kidney, and liver disorders

The underground stem
[rhizome] is aromatic and is used in beverages and in certain food preparations
and in perfume from essential oil of calamus.
Insecticidal properties
are ascribed to[Asarone] dry powdered roots of calamus.
A variety of disorders
are treated using the rhizome of the plant., The chief remedial source is
generally the rhizome as in Skin ailments, scab, sores, Dermatitis, Eczema
[rhizome powder +turmeric powder].
Stomach ache is treated
by using the ash from burnt rhizome, while the whole plant [all parts] is used
for treating Rheumatism.. Preparations from rhizome of Acorus are used in
controlling Diarrhoea, and the plant is known as an Antidepressant too.
All these uses are
known among several civilizations across the world [ not so widely recognized
in United states].
